Hi...I've just come across this on another forum.....It made me sick to my stomach!!!! How can such atrocities be allowed to go on in our so-called "civilised" country!!!....There's no wonder our fish stocks are getting more and more depleated with carnage like this....This is goin on at Port Erin and so I believe, perfectly legal!!

I’ve posted a link and some pics below, you have to register to view the link.

I haven't kept a Mullet since I was about 12yrs old (I kept one and it tasted horrible anyway) - with conservation in mind, I have been returning my Mullet carefully to the water. I would have been very dissapointed if just one of them had gone belly-up.

All this effort seems very trivial now.

Same thing happened in Cornwalllast ayear at Sennen Cove - they caught (th elocal netting family) over a tonne of mullet - they said the net was so full they had to get a tractor down on the beach to haul it in.

Only about 15 years of growth gone there - in one tide. The trouble is, the mullet do gather in huge shoals just off shore every now and then. Put a net round and they have no chance.

Not nice as an angler to see that Dave

If the commercial fisherman over here get their way, we will be seeing similar sights here, the only difference being the boxes will be full of Bass

In case anyone missed it

Its been going on for years, and will carry on being done. Commercial fishermen do it every summer when the mullet come inshore, they don't get very much money for them. but that's man for you, if they can get a buck they will. i have seen the same off the Gower with bass, we will not stop it. the only thing that will stop it is when they are all gone, and there will still be that man who will be glad to kill the last swimming :?

Dai.

It's an absolute bloody disgrace, apparently this practice is going on all the time around our coast, including Cornwall and Kent etc. These so called "fishermen" sell their catch for next to nothing or as crab pot bait. It's so single minded of the authorities to turn a blind eye to this, they just can't see that sport angling brings in far more revenue to these areas than that which is generated by netting.

Here's an update on the IoM mullet situation. I emailed Dr Mike Ladle, Matt Hayes and Henry Gilbey, all, myself included self confessed Mullet nuts.

I was contacted the next day by Mike Ladle, he knew a little of what was going on and gave me loads of info and contacts. He also told me that the netting goes on at various locations around our coast, he seems like a very nice bloke.

Matt Hayes contacted a journo friend of his, Ben Fisk who writes for the Angling Times. Ben wants to write a piece on the subject to raise awareness. I put him in contact with Kevin Walmsley who is secretary of the IoM Angling Federation and they are putting something together.

Henry Gilbey emailed me, he said he had heard about the situation and that he was "horrified" but that’s about all really. I emailed him again, told him of Matt’s involvement and asked if he could have a word with his contacts in the media to raise awareness. That was on the 3rd of this month and I haven't had a reply.

According to Kevin Walmsley, the Manx government and MAFF have been inundated with people phoning and emailing them venting their anger. With this in mind they set up an online petition and it will be presented to the Manx government. A link to the petition is below. Please, please take time to sign it. It only takes a few seconds of your time.

Thanks for your time.
Cheers Dave

Hi

Thought this might be of interest:

I was listening to 'The Food Programme' on Radio 4 today (4.00-4.30pm). The subject was "Sustainable Fisheries". It was all hunky dory - persuading chefs to avoid bluefin tuna, etc. - till the reporter described the scene in the Paris fish market. He then listed a variety of fresh-caught delicacies, and ended with "...and huge mullet". (At which point this thread immediately came to mind.)

And that's not all. Five or ten minutes later, during a discussion of the benefits of using local-caught fish, special mention was made of the delicious smoked mullet. They were either saying it's a Dutch recipe that they recommend we take up, or that we are sending our mullet for the Dutch to enjoy in this way. Either way I was a little taken aback.

Is this kind of thing common knowledge, or is it of interest? (I'd be particularly interested to hear from the opening poster.)

Incidentally - did anything ever come of the complaints that were issued re the situation in the Isle of Man, etc.?
