<oops - I posted this in the swffing section for some reason, and it should have been here!>
Hurrrrrayyyy!
I'm not a great caster (inconsistent at best i'd say!) but in December I managed to track down an Orvis distributor in the States who still had some brand new Zero Gravity rods (having cast a 7wt the year before and though 'wow, that feels really easy to cast'), so both Portcullis and I both snapped one up (I had a 9wt, and he had an 8wt). At just over £200 brand new from the store, and with the prospect of any breakage resulting in replacement with a Helios, it seemed money well spent. Well, they arrived and have been duly admired and caressed. But this weekend, for the first time, I finally made it out to the field with a 9wt WF airflo line I bought just for practising, to give it a go. And for the first time ever, I managed to put the entire line out! (Carl would no doubt feel like his greatest challenge has finally come good)! I'm sure for loads of you guys this is no big deal, but I honestly never thought I'd do this. It's a 30m line, so not the longest, but hey...it's a good 4-5m further than my best ever, and to prove it wasn't a fluke I got within 2 or 3 feet of it about 8 times! Aaand I had a 10ft leader and a de-pointed 2/0 bucktail deceiver on the end too! As it turned over and dropped to the floor for the first time, I put the rod down, pulled my sweatshirt over my head and ran around in circles doing the silent crowd-scream thing with my hands in the air! Then I took a photo of the line to urgently show my disinterested wife and children. I can expect no sharing of my joy there, but hope that our little swffing enclave here will indulge my brief moment of euphoria!
It seems a good rod, that 'feels right' really does make a biiiig difference!
